Into the Dark - which cave is for you?
There are hundreds of caves throughout the Southwest of Western Australia, however there are only a few that can be explored by the public. Below is a guide to 6 to help you chose which cave or caves are best for you. We have visited all of these and they all have their pulls. The caves run the Capes Foundation you can get a discount through the locals app if you are a local (along with other activities they run). The two caves run by the Department of Environment & Conservation (Giants and Calgardup) are cheaper but Giants is not open as often.
Ngilgi Cave. Best family orientated cave and closest to Busselton.We visit Ngilgi the most, it is close and it is pretty and there is loads to keep everyone busy for hours. There are interactive displays. This is now a self guided tour but there are guides in the cave that you can ask questions.
Mammoth Cave. This cave is self guided with a audio headset. We really enjoy this and you get to go through at your own pace. The information on mega fauna that used to dwell here is really fascinating. The first chamber is wheelchair accessible. We also enjoy the walk back through the forest at the end.
Lakes Cave. This is a one hour guided tour it is an amazing cave but there are a lot of stairs. This is the only cave you can visit with a underground lake and suspended table.
Jewel Cave. Is also guided and the largest of the accessible caves but also has a lot of stairs. Probably has the most beautiful formations but is also the furthest from Busselton. Better for older kids. Also has a walk trail.
Calgardup Cave. This is the most accessible cave but still has stairs. Great for all ages. View via torchlight and helmet. Suitable for all ages.
Giants Cave. Would be the most adventurous cave with ladders and tight squeezes. View via torchlight and helmet. Minimum age six. Check hours as change - usually open school holidays and weekends
